Name: Madeleine, Maddy, Maeleine

Home School: Barrie North Collegiate

Hobbies: I love to keep busy so I have tons of hobbies. I’m always creating something whether it is a wooden boomerang, a painting, or a dress. I love building things out of wood and one day soon I am going to build a backyard gazebo. I also enjoy sewing and making my own dresses. However I hate sewing machines, any dresses I make are hand sewn. I actually spent most of March Break hand sewing and beading costumes for my Colony to Nationhood project (I can no longer count the amount of times I stabbed myself with a sewing needle for the sake of Morocco). Another past time I love is extra curricular activities. At Barrie North Collegiate I was very involved (and still am) in school clubs like book club, the environmental team, Student Council, School Council, and the list goes on. I love being involved in my school and helping make it a place where students want to be. Since coming to Innisdale for the Global Perspectives Program I have gotten involved in the school through the Innisdale newspaper, The Invader Updater, which I love to write for, it is always exciting to open the newspaper and see your story and your name in print. I write about City Council for the school newspaper which is another one of my interests, keeping up to date with politics and world news is important to me. I like taking an active role in leadership and politics so I have spent time in municipal and federal politics; I was Barrie Student Mayor and a delegate for the Student Commonwealth.

Fav Quote: My favourite quote of all time is by Martin Luther King Jr. “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
I love this quote, because it says exactly how I feel. Until someone attains idealistic peace and global unity everyone needs something to fight for. I think his quote inspires people to stand up for what they believe in and keep fighting.

Future Plans: No matter what I do in the future, I want adventure. Adventure is one of the most important things to me, without adventure your life is generic and tedious. Without adventure you become comfortable and boring. Part of my search for adventure is travel. I love traveling to new places and immersing myself in the culture and the language. Languages are incredibly fascinating and with language comes power. Knowing another language opens so many doors, that is part of the reason I hope to take French Immersion at Ottawa University, I also want to study Political science at Ottawa U and eventually become a Foreign Service Officer working in the politics sector. Another consideration is Queens University for Political Studies and French, and Herstmonceaux Castle for art history.  After University I would also love to take part in the JET (Japanese Exchange Teacher) program for a year.

Special extra things: Art is another important aspect of my life. I have been drawing and painting since my parents gave me those chubby crayons for babies. I have taken art lessons at the MacLaren art centre and have been entering art contests since I was a kid. I love using art as a form of expression and an outlet, but even more I love studying other artwork especially pieces by impressionists such as Van Gogh, Monet, and Degas. I love Vincent Van Gogh’s work and have admired it for as long as I can remember. With my love of art and history one of my favourite things to do when traveling is to visit museums and galleries. I especially enjoy the art institute of Chicago, where I saw my first VanGogh painting in real life.
