Testimonials

I was delighted to hear that Barrie City Council are planning to have the 7th June declared as the Sir Robert Barre Day. I understand that this is in honour of the 8th anniversary of the signing of the Twinning Certificate at Ripley Castle and the 180th anniversary of the death of Sir Robert. I was actually at the church service in Ripley and remember it well. I hope all goes well and I send you my best wishes.

It does not seem eight years since Mayor Lehman and I signed the twinning certificate between Barrie and Harrogate in the historic setting of Ripley; the final resting place of Sir Robert Barrie and his wife Lady Julia Wharton-Ingilby. Since then many friendships have been established between members of both communities. May I, on behalf of Harrogate International Partnerships, send greetings from your friends in Harrogate, on this auspicious day.

Hon. Alderman Michael Newby

Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate

The school is delighted to be visiting Barrie, one of Harrogate’s international twin towns as part of the concert tour. Dennis Richards, committee member of Harrogate International Partnerships and teacher at St. John Fisher commented “It’s great that more young people from Harrogate can link up with Barrie following on from the visit of the Tewit Youth Band last year [2018]”. Craig Ratcliffe, Head of music added “It’s really important for students to see the wider world, and to be so welcomed by Barrie is a real honour

It was my privilege to visit Harrogate as Barrie's Representative to their Remembrance Day Ceremonies in 2018. I was greeted like a long-lost friend and immediately felt like I'd "come home". A little bit of everything greets you - from ancient ruins, impressive castle, bustling town, honoured history, beloved sports teams, plentiful and beautiful parks, to classic pubs and quaint tea houses - and everywhere you are warmly welcomed. This is an extraordinary community with truly wonderful people, and we are extremely fortunate to be able to call them a "Sister City". You owe it to yourself to visit our friends across the pond... tell them Barrie sent you!
